My Story
Who I am
Dr. Anjlee Agarwal is National Awardee and pioneer Universal Accessibility & Sustainable Mobility Specialist. She is an assisted wheelchair user living with limb girdle muscular dystrophy since she was 18 years old. Determined to channel her adversity into opportunity, she sees her challenges as a unique chance for making the world accessible and has become the ultimate agent for change.
She is co-founder of Samarthyam Organization of Persons with Disabilities founded in 1991 and has special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2015. She is Member, NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming) CSO Standing Committee, Government of India.
Promoting Sustainable and Liveable Societies is her mission and she is passionate about gender friendly spaces where mobility is without barriers. Anjlee has authored several universal accessibility manuals, guidelines and codes and is Principal Author of “Harmonised Guidelines and Space Standards, 2016” for Government of India and National Building Code of India, 2016 for Bureau of Indian Standards. She embodies her values; finding creative opportunity in diversity and adversity, and daring to be different, she proves the value and power of true disability representation in all areas of her work and life.
Anjlee doesn’t just talk. She enables and creates change. In everything she does, from travelling the world and raising awareness to train planners, engineers and architects, access audit of built environment, and raising concerns of disability rights, she lives, breathes and creates the change she wants to see in the world.
Anjlee has pioneered inclusion of persons with disabilities especially girls and women with disabilities in the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. To her credit is exemplary work of creating the ‘Covid 19 Action Collaborative’ to support stakeholders to collaborate, coordinate and integrate the Covid-19 Response.
